DEPRESSION THERAPY IN TORONTO, ON

Is Your Harshest Critic In Life...Yourself?

Are you struggling with low self-esteem, body-image issues, or negative self-talk that’s sucking all the joy out of your life? Do you constantly have to contend with:

  • Unexplained bouts of sadness, hopelessness, anger, guilt, or shame?

  • Mood swings, irritability, impatience, fatigue, or emotional exhaustion?

  • Sleep disruptions, changes in appetite, or loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed?

Perhaps you feel like your mental health is finally buckling under the chronic strain of social stigmas, homophobia, or workplace discrimination.

Or maybe you’re considering depression therapy because you don’t really feel anything anymore, and it’s starting to affect everything from your sex life to your career.

Depression Can Work Its Way Into Nearly Every Aspect Of Life

Living with depression often means trudging through the day feeling disconnected, hopeless, and alone. You probably get lost in self-criticism and compare yourself to others unfairly. The steady stream of negative thoughts and heavy feelings makes it difficult to be productive at work or show up in your relationships the way you want to.

You may try to exercise your way through the emotional pain or turn to social media, food, sex, or substances, none of which makes you feel better for long. And even though you can dig yourself out of that hole for a few days, it seems like you always find yourself right back in the mud again, unable to crawl out or even understand how you got there.

As the founder of Liam McElheron Psychotherapy and a member of the LGBTQ community myself, I understand just how devastating depression can be. Whether you’re searching for greater meaning, joy, or connection in your life, depression therapy can help you expand your world and find enduring relief.

How Depression Disproportionally Affects The Gay Community

Like anyone else, guys in the LGBTQ community often struggle with depression as a result of biological or genetic influences. Difficult life changes—such as moving to a new city, switching careers, or getting out of a long-term relationship—can stir up uncertainty and self-doubt. Oftentimes, grief and loss or major disappointments can play a role in depression.

However, gay guys also have to deal with minority stress, prejudice, and oppressive news and politics. Having to conceal our identity for fear of reprisal or rejection fuels self-consciousness and issues of low self-worth. Then there’s the stress of coming out! All of these additional stressors make depression even more of a threat to those in the gay community.

Depression Therapy Is Crucial, Especially For The LGBTQ Population

Research shows that LGBTQ individuals are 1.5 to 2.5 times more likely to experience depression and anxiety as compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Because we also risk internalizing homophobic or transphobic beliefs, recovering from depression on our own becomes doubly difficult.

Sometimes, we’ll try to make adjustments to other areas of our life, hoping that will do the trick. We might hide who we really are, focus excessively on our physical appearance, or dial back on certain behaviours rather than treating the underlying problems sustaining depression.

That’s why working with a depression counsellor is such a powerful resource—it lets you know what you’re really dealing with and what you can do to achieve more than superficial improvements. Together, we can target the critical self-talk, identify the things that give your life meaning, and create healthier, more self-affirming ways of navigating this world.

Depression Therapy Is A Space Where You Can Be Yourself

One of the most important parts of depression counselling is making sure you connect with someone who resonates with you—someone who truly understands where you are coming from. As a gay therapist, I’m proud to offer that kind of like-minded support, utilizing a range of evidence-based therapy models to tailor depression treatment to each individual.

Whatever your situation is, whatever your goals are, I want to give you a space where you can be yourself and talk about things that you may not be able to share with anyone else. Working together, I’ll help you identify, understand, and break the patterns that perpetuate depression, empowering you to make new choices and actualize the changes you want to see in your life.

What Will We Do In Depression CounselLing Sessions?

First, we’ll explore your personal experiences and family history to get a picture of the contributing factors behind what you’re going through. We’ll look at how you spend your days, including where depression is causing the most trouble, and then collaborate on setting goals for treatment so that the changes we make are meaningful to you.

In ongoing therapy sessions, we’ll work on identifying what triggers depression while teaching you practical strategies for managing your symptoms better. We’ll look at how inner conflict, self-criticism, and internalized biases distort your relationship with yourself and feed persistent feelings of numbness or flatness in your life.

In turn, that insight will help us interrupt those negative, self-defeating patterns and incorporate new, more positive ways of thinking into daily life.

What Specific Tools Do We Use In Depression Treatment Sessions?

My goal as your depression therapist is to help you get to a place where you feel lighter and freer, yet more grounded, confident, and in control of how you move through this world. To do that, I’ll draw from several somatic, cognitive, and emotionally-driven treatment strategies:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you identify negative thinking patterns that sustain depression while simultaneously installing healthier, more positive thinking and behavioural patterns.

  • Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) enables you to process the painful underlying emotions that tend to produce and accompany depression, such as guilt, shame, and fear, transforming those feelings into more helpful emotions.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) teaches you techniques and strategies you can use throughout your life to regulate emotions, be more mindful, and enjoy healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) will help you identify and bring balance to the conflicting parts of yourself that create pain and sadness so that those parts are no longer in control.

You Can Live A More Authentic And Connected Life

Whether you’re struggling with a major life change, symptoms of clinical depression, or just the feeling of being stuck and alone, therapy truly can transform your life. Working together, you can learn to recognize negative, self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviours—and actually break those patterns.

You’ll be able to manage and diffuse debilitating triggers. You’ll gain a deeper, more compassionate understanding of yourself that will stand up to self-criticism—and, most importantly, you will finally be able to reconnect with yourself and loved ones while building a more authentic life altogether.

Still Have Thoughts Or Questions About Depression Therapy?

At this point, I feel like nothing will ever change.

Although this is a common and understandable concern, I work differently than many other depression counsellors: I believe that you are the expert on your life, which is why I’ll collaborate with you to set goals and identify the tools that best fit your needs and preferences.

Using that client-centred approach to depression treatment combined with my professional expertise as a therapist and my personal experience as a gay man, I truly believe we can create change in your life, no matter how severe or hopeless the situation may seem.

I worry that depression counselling will only make me feel worse.

As with any kind of healing, treating a wound can be a little uncomfortable…at first. However, confronting your thoughts and feelings with someone who can decipher their meaning and offer you real, unbiased support will ultimately help you feel better.

Depression flourishes in isolation, but once you let go of the idea that you have to figure it out all on your own—once you ask for the help that you deserve—that’s when your world expands and life starts to change.

How do I know you will understand what I’ve been going through?

Since 2018, I have supported a wide range of clients experiencing depression. My holistic, client-centred approach to therapy tackles depression from multiple angles using somatic, cognitive, and emotionally driven techniques to reduce symptoms, no matter how severe or complex.

As a gay man, I am particularly experienced in helping other LGBTQ+ individuals and our allies navigate their unique challenges. All of my work is informed by my professional skills, my personal knowledge, and a deep belief that everyone deserves to feel at peace with themselves.
